1. She Leaves
Dan DiMonte/Liz Schorsch
The red taillights
Sped off into the autumn rain
There’s breakfast on the stove
To fight the morning cold
And you’ve upped and gone
Summertime has passed
And all the things we thought would last
Have blown away like promises
That only you had heard
And I told you I was right for you
And then you said that you’d fallen for me
Like the autumn leaves
But like the leaves that break free
And fly from the tree
I let you fall away from me
I didn’t say a word as you walked out the door
So I don’t deserve you anymore
So run away (run away)
Run away (run away run away)
Run away from the ghost of us
As I sit alone it haunts me
The gusts of wind they taunt me
And the leaves cut my face
The thunder shakes the skies
And then I finally realize
I know where you’ll be
And I want you to see
That like the fallen leaves of autumn trees
Blown away by the breezes
I too can…
I can change
My feet splash through puddles
And the wind pounds my chest
As I storm into the sheets of rain
Looking for the best way to say
That I know in my soul
I want you and no one else
So you can take the promises
And I’ll take the blame
But know though it was twisted it was love
And like the fallen leaves of autumn trees
Blown away by the breezes
I too can…
I too can change.

2. Long Day
Dan DiMonte
When it rains it pours
So close the windows and lock the doors
The flock of birds flew between the trees
Saturday is coming soon
But the end don’t mean goodbye
Memories last a minute
But legends never die
When I’m down I know
Mary looks down on me
Sometimes I’m afraid to show
What’s hidden inside of me
It’s a long, long, long, long day
It’s a long, long, long, long day
Can’t seem to speak your mind
When your mind’s in another place
The flock of birds has gone to rest
So when it rains it pours
And with it comes the hurt
And when your eagle soars
Your cage is lost in the dirt
When I’m down I know
Mary looks down on me
Sometimes I’m afraid to show
What’s hidden inside of me
It’s a long, long, long, long day
It’s a long, long, long, long day
It’s a long, long, long, long day
It’s a long, long, long, long day
It’s a long, long, long, long day
It’s a long, long, long, long day
It’s a long, long, long, long day

The Little Chapel

3. The Little Chapel
Dan DiMonte
The snow came falling down
Outside the little chapel’s windows
As I sat alone downstairs
Toiling over a broken piano
Piecing bits of chords together
Forcing out a work of labored art
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, oh Lord
The storm blew out the power
On the eastern side of town
So I lit myself a candle and
I felt the warmth as the flame began to glow
Suddenly it came to me
In anguished perfect harmony
The saddest sound my ears had ever heard
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, oh Lord
A casket that was far too small
To fit someone who had lived their life
Awaited me as I walked up the stairs
The congregation gathered round
The mothers and the children weeping
The fathers fighting tears back themselves
The Preacher said, “This child of ours
Was taken without explanation
And I have none to give you today
But know she’s in a better place
Filled with hope, love, and grace.
Pray that we will see her again.”
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia,
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, oh Lord
The snow came falling down
Outside the little chapel
As winter closed its fist around my town.

4. Smile
Dan DiMonte
I’ve been stuck inside for a lifetime begging
Begging the world for some place to go
I’ve been sleeping with my head underwater
For every yes there’s a thousand no’s
You were hearing the music in your head
But you were not listening to a single word it said
Give me something
Something to smile about
Is it the birds in the trees or the bees aw please don’t tell me
I can see it from the look in your eye
You don’t got wings on your back but I know when I’ve seen an angel
Take my hand and baby let’s fly
You were hearing the music in your head
But you were not listening to a single word it said
Give me something
Something to smile about
We were flying high in the sky then we landed and said see you later
Then my life became just a little more grounded
Now I’m back in the grind never minding the time that I spent in Heaven
I needed some happiness and baby I found it
You were hearing the music in your head
But you were not listening to a single word it said
Give me something
Something to smile about

5. La Sombra
Dan DiMonte/Zoe Mayberry
A veces creo que no tengo problema (Sometimes I think I don’t have a problem)
Pero entonces una sombra tiene sorpresa (but then a shadow has a surprise)
No puedo evitarla, no puedo hacer nada (I can’t avoid it, I can’t do anything)
Mi Corazón esta pesado con mucha emoción (My heart is heavy with much emotion)
Una sombra está conmigo (A shadow is with me)
Una sombra está conmigo (A shadow is with me)
A veces creo que tengo un problema grande (Sometimes I think I have a big problem)
Quiero ocultar esta emoción todos los días (I want to hide this emotion everyday)
Necesito hablar con la oscuridad (I need to talk with the darkness)
Y digo que necesitas salir la cabeza (And say to it, “Leave my head”.)
Una sombra está conmigo (A shadow is with me)
Una sombra está conmigo (A shadow is with me)
Una sombra está conmigo (A shadow is with me)
Una sombra está conmigo (A shadow is with me)
A veces creo que no puedo poner fin a esto. (Sometimes I think I can’t put an end to this)
y voy a desaparecer en la noche para siempre (and I’m going to disappear into the night forevermore)
Necesito intentar para mí sanidad (I need to try for my sanity)
Hoy es el día de mi libertad (Today is the day of my freedom)
“¡Basta! Déjame solo.” (Enough! Leave me alone.)
Una sombra está conmigo (A shadow is with me)
Una sombra está conmigo (A shadow is with me)
Una sombra está conmigo (A shadow is with me)
Una sombra está conmigo (A shadow is with me)

6. Blown Away
Dan DiMonte
Blown away, you have me
Blown away
Like the waves on the shore rolling to our feet
That return to the sea you have me
Blown away
Blown away, you have me
Blown away
Like the waves on the shore rolling to our feet
That return to the sea you have me
Blown away
I like who I am with you much better than when I'm all alone it's true
So I figured I'd write this song to tell you that I
I love everything about you
Blown away, you have me
Blown away
Like the waves on the shore rolling to our feet
That return to the sea you have me
Blown away
I like who I am with you much better than when I'm all alone it's true
So I figured I'd write this song to tell you that I
I love everything about you
Blown away, you have me
Blown away
Like the waves on the shore rolling to our feet
That return to the sea you have me
Blown away

7. Harmony
Dan DiMonte
Before things get a little heavy
I’ve gotta get something off my chest
This might sound just a little crazy
But there’s something I’ve got to confess
There’s something ‘bout a girl with a voice all her own
You see I got one of those myself
I can only get so far playing my guitar alone
I’ve gotta just shout, baby, gotta let it out ‘cause it ain’t good for my soul.
And you understand what I’m going through
Don’t know what I want but I do what I wanna do
Maybe we should figure out what’s happening.
I know that you are with another man,
But I just wanted you to know that
I never felt harmony ‘til I had you singin’ right next to me.
I know this is kind of a longshot
So I hope you feel the same way, too
But you’ve gotta sift through your soul ‘cause I know that you love another man
So I’ll be there with my guitar on the floor just standing at your door and a’waitin’ for waitin’ for
And you understand what I’m going through
Don’t know what I want but I do what I wanna do
Maybe we should figure out what’s happening.
I know that you are with another man,
But I just wanted you to know that
I never felt harmony ‘til I had you singin’ right next to…
Me, you understand what I’m going through
Don’t know what I want but I do what I wanna do
Maybe we should figure out what’s happening.
I know that you are with another man,
But I just wanted you to know that
I never felt harmony ‘til I had you singin’ right next to me.

8. Safe from the Rain
Dan DiMonte
As the sun sets on the city,
The rays of light nearly clear the horizon,
The clouds move into formations.
The walls I put up around my soul,
They help me day by day,
But it’s the night when the rain comes
And I know, due to my offenses,
It’s time to face my consequences.
I hope and pray that you don’t do the same.
I hope you’re safe from the rain
Safe from the rain.
I hope you’re safe from the rain, my dear,
‘cause it’s pouring over here,
And a bed that once was a place of love
Now drowns in Heaven’s tears
The anguish that I’m feeling
Is worse than death itself
But I couldn’t wish it on anyone else
And I know, due to my offenses,
It’s time to face my consequences.
I hope and pray that you don’t do the same.
I wouldn’t want to cause you any pain.
And I know, due to my offenses,
It’s time to face my consequences
I hope and pray that you don’t do the same.
I hope you’re safe from the rain
Safe from the rain
Safe from the rain
Safe from the rain

9. Roscoe Street Strut
Dan DiMonte
I’ve been waiting so long
For a sunny day
It makes me feel alright
And that things are going my way
I wanna sing high
‘cause I feel so alive
Gonna roll into town with my windows down
Gonna strut my stuff up on the stage
For the people tonight
Oh Freedom! Oh Alleluia!
As sure as there’s a God above, my brother,
You’ve gotta live life in love
There are the men who spend the grind getting stepped on
And there are the men who spend it wearing the shoes
I prefer the congregation to feel the love, move with the groove,
And dance away the blues
You remember that red-haired girl who lived down on Roscoe?
The one I met last week at the carnival?
Like the drums in the back of the band she takes my heart for a ride
She’s unlike any other, and she’s here tonight.
Oh Freedom! Oh Alleluia!
As sure as there’s a God above, my brother,
You’ve gotta live life in love

The Runner & The Lover

10. The Runner and the Lover
Dan DiMonte
There’s a window down on Gilbert Street where time and space can finally meet
The Runner speeds right by and doesn’t realize that it calls his name
Runner run run run away, Runner run run run away
Run away, ‘cause you know that you can’t stay
The Runner’s got a Lover that he’s been seeing for quite some time now
And her heart is charred with all the scars of flames he’s burned before
She holds on for what he’s been, holds on for what he’ll be again
Someday, but she can only stay for so long
The Runner felt the familiar aura of entrapment and jealousy
And he ran away to the whores from whence he came
The empty gestures of greener pastures that seemed so different and free
Were never worth it, and burned him all the same.
The Runner awoke in the gutter, his head spinning like a dime
His clothes were wet with the evening’s sweat and regret came across his mind
He tried his very best to get up from the mess
But he couldn’t, couldn’t shake off all the grime
It seemed the runner was running out of time
Then he crawled his way across the alley, his body folding in the morning heat
And he stood upright in the summer light and then he found he was standing on Gilbert Street
The window called his name, he saw his rugged shame
And realized the one place he should be
Is with her, away from poisonous memories
Runner run run run away
Runner run run run away
Run run run away
Run run run away (Run away run away)
Run run run away (Run away run away)
Run run run away (Run away run away)
Run run run away (Run away run away)
The traffic signs and power lines were flying by as he ran away
From the life that he had suddenly decided to throw away
And he opened up the door
To find the girl that he loved before
To find a note left by the phone
To find he was nothing to dwell on
To find that she’d already gone

The Next Stage

11. The Next Stage
Dan DiMonte
I’m surrounded, I mean absolutely stifled
By those stiffs in their caps and gowns
This polyester sea is overpowering me
And I feel like I’ll surely drown
The stranger sitting next me had a look on his face that said,
“It’s time to leave this place”
Then he turned my way and this is what he said to me
He said,
Hey man I hope you’ve got a plan
‘Cause I left mine hanging on a lecture hall seat
Who knows what we’ll say or the music we’ll play
Or the crazy people we’re gonna meet
I say if you’ve got the wheels and I’ve got the time
Then it’s time to step onto the next stage of our lives
When I’m onstage it’s unlike any other feeling
I’m manic, yet euphoric at the same time
I hope you know what you want out of your life
‘Cause I know what I wanna do with mine
Oh I got my diploma and I got congratulations
And took all the handshakes
To what degree does this little piece of paper prove
That I’ve got what it takes?
Suddenly I notice the polyester sea has parted in front of me
Me and that stranger, we going for a ride
Hey man I hope you’ve got a plan
‘Cause I left mine hanging on a lecture hall seat
Who knows what we’ll say or the music we’ll play
Or the crazy people we’re gonna meet
I say if you’ve got the wheels and I’ve got the time
Then it’s time oh it’s time, to step the next stage in our
Lives, lives, step onto the next stage of our
Lives, lives, step onto the next stage
I say if you’ve got the wheels and I’ve got the time
Then it’s time to step onto the next stage of our lives

12. Under the Bridge over the Water
Dan DiMonte
Remember when we were younger
And life seemed to move oh so slow?
Nothing else mattered but the love that we had for each other
And we'd meet under the bridge over the water.
We'd walk through the meadow at sunset
With bare feet and love, love in our souls.
Running our hands through the sand by the riverside
And we'd kiss under the bridge over the water.
Give me the strength to take things that I can't change
Give me the courage the change the things I can
Give me the eyes to see the difference between them
So I don't make that mistake again.
When the road tears your soul down,
And you need a place where you can go,
Follow the signs where your heart leads,
And meet me under the bridge over the water.
Then I got a job layin' steel down,
'Cause school, it seemed like a waste of time.
Then I got moved to the Chicago Southside,
And I worked, worked on a bridge over the water.
Then I got a job waiting tables at a burger joint,
'Cause school was the only way outta this town
I bought a degree and I drove away and never looked back
Taking my heart across the bridge over the water
Give me the strength to take things that I can't change
Give me the courage the change the things I can
Give me the eyes to see the difference between them
So I don't make that mistake again.
When the road tears your soul down,
And you need a place where you can go,
Follow the signs where your heart leads,
And meet me under the bridge over the water.
Sometimes I wish we could go back
To a time when life moved oh so slow.
Follow me down to the riverside
And meet me under the bridge over the water.
I'll wait for you (I’ll wait for you)
Under the bridge over the water.

Song For The Working Man
06:31
|

13. Song for the Working Man
Dan DiMonte/Josh Vaske
Working man wakes up before the sun
Simple breakfast of black coffee and cold bread
Then he loads up his truck and goes back inside
Kiss his wife on the lips and the kids on their foreheads
Punches in his card, puts his hard hat on
Seven stories closer to God and he starts his day
Laying steel can be such hard work in the hot, hot sun
Knows his work will remain even when he’s gone away
And you don’t hear him complaining
‘Cause he’s the working man
Kids greet him at the door with a great big hug
His wife asks him, “how was your day?” with a smile on her face
He says that work was fine, “what’s for dinner, hun?”
Then he stands for a while and he thinks with a smile
That there’s so many things in life that you can’t replace
And the years go by, and his children grow
And he’s laying down that steel because you know
He’s a working man
The working man lies in bed on a cold December night
He tells his family it’s time for him to go away
His wife kisses him on the lips and the kids on his forehead
Then he closes his eyes, and he hears a faint voice say:
You don’t gotta work no more
You don’t gotta work no more
You don’t gotta work no more
You don’t gotta work no more
You don’t gotta work no more
You don’t gotta work no more
You don’t gotta work no more
You don’t gotta work no more
You don’t gotta work no more
You don’t gotta work no more
You don’t gotta work no more
You don’t gotta work no…
And you never heard him complaining
‘Cause he’s the working man.

Snake Alley

14. Snake Alley
Dan DiMonte
I grabbed my keys and decided enough is enough
The rising sun on this cold autumn morning is making this quite tough
Zoe tell me are you coming to see me today?
It’s a great day for lying it’s a great day for flying away
The birds in the trees are getting ready for their trek down South
And the hipsters play down on Ped Mall way suckin’ serenity outta cigs in their mouths
Oh last night, Zoe, I saw Clinton Street was burning up in flames
Of young lovers not knowing the difference ‘tween a bottle of Jack and their brains
We don’t care if the world stops spinnin’
For all that we know and all that we’re given
stickin’ round here don’t make much sense anymore
I got my guitar and you’ve got your voice
And I think it’s about time we made that choice
The open road’s waiting and you know what I came for
So just open up your door
The steam whistle out by the dam is telling me it’s time to go
And I wish time could heal all these stains and grimaces that I wear on the sleeve of my soul
I ask my brother Johnny to lend me a few bucks
‘Cause gas these days ain’t as cheap as the love you can find on the street with some luck
Hey Zo you know we’re crazy for doing this so fast
This one rash decision might cause some division ‘tween our future, present, and past
But we don’t have time to think things through as we should
‘Cause my current life preference made me lose my reverence for things that I thought were good
We don’t care if the world stops spinnin’
For all that we know and all that we’re given
stickin’ round here don’t make much sense anymore
I got my guitar and you’ve got your voice
And I think it’s about time we made that choice
The open road’s waiting and you know what I came for
So just open up your door
We got in the car and it might be a sin
But we drove our love all the way down to Burlington
Then I parked my car and we sat on a log by the shore
I can see my home’s just a river walk away
But your home’s waiting from back where we came
And I don’t wanna take you from all that you know and adore
This road ain’t just one way it’s more like a revolving door
And life is like a snake alley twisting and turning about
And the only thing we know is there’s one way in and one way out
And the bridge was calling telling me to come on home
But my westward life was crying don’t leave me alone
Just ‘cause I’m here don’t mean I’m here to stay
Turn around baby we’ll try it another day
She shut the door I put the metal to the floor and I said aw man ain’t it a pity
And we drove into this darkness looking to park this mess back into Iowa City
Now tell me what’s more important, the ends or the space between?
‘Cause you’re the most beautiful thing in the world that my two eyes have ever seen
Ever seen, ever seen!
We don’t care if the world stops spinnin’
For all that we know and all that we’re given
stickin’ round here don’t make much sense anymore
I got my guitar and you’ve got your voice
And I think it’s about time we made that choice
The open road’s waiting and you know what I came for
The open road’s waiting and you know what I came for
So just open up your door
